Bloody Maria

Bloody Maria recipe from south of the border.  My brother Miguel lives in one of the rougest cities in what has become the most violent country in the world – Mexico. When he visits, he expects nothing short of a good stiff bloody Mary. To ease his culture shock, I always switch from vodka to tequila. Here’s how to make a delicious Bloody Maria Recipe -A bloody Mary mix with a Mexican twist: start by filling your shaker with ice. Grind lots of fresh black pepper over the top. Next sprinkle dried, ground cilantro over the ice.  Squeeze a large wedge of fresh lime and add a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper.  (better yet, use dried jalapeño pepper!)

When it comes to tequila, I prefer to use a nice blanco, but any type will do. Please don’t use the cheap stuff.  You’ll ruin good tomato juice. Tequila has a very distinct flavor.  The low quality distillations can easily overpower the flavor.  Pour enough tequila to fill the glass to about the one third of the way full.  Top it off with good tomato juice and sprinkle a little celery salt on top. Clamato juice also works pretty well for those who prefer a thinner consistency.

Time to garnish. I’ve used everything from chorizo-stuffed chili peppers to pickled jalapeno peppers. !Que comida mas rica! The Bloody Maria recipe is a great festive alternative to the standard bloody Mary recipe.  Serve it at your next Cinco de Mayo cocktail party, Dia De Los Muertes, or any occasion.  It’s not just a bloody Mary, it’s a bloody Maria!

For any even bolder, more spicy bloody Maria recipe,  try infusing your tequila with jalapeno pepper for a week or two. Simply drop two to three peppers into the tequila a week before serving. The spice your bloody Maria dons will be fresh and delicious! CARAMBA!

Often, people who don’t normally drink bloody Mary’s find this drink a refreshing alternative. Try out the bloody Maria recipe with the next person who tells you they don’t like bloody Mary’s!

Bacon Bloody Mary – the perfect balance of food and drink recipe! There are two things that I expect from a good brunch: Bacon and bloody Mary’s! Eggs? Fine. Hash browns? Whatever. There are also two things that I have found to be the best hangover cures: Greasy food and more alcohol. So here it is- the perfect brunch, the perfect hangover cure: the bacon bloody Mary! Serve this at your next brunch and skip the egg bake!

Start by infusing vodka with bacon. To a quart of your favorite vodka, add 3 strips of cooked bacon.  Careful not to burn it.  Baking on a cookie sheet works well.  While you’re at it, cook up some extra.  Ever had to throw out leftover bacon? I didn’t think so.  Let it infuse for a week or two. (I keep bacon infused vodka on my shelf at all times)

As usual, start by filling a shaker with ice. Next, crack some fresh black pepper over that ice. Now crack some more delicious pepper. It really goes well with this drink. Splash about a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and a dash of celery salt. (go easy on the celery salt.  It can be pretty salty. Squeeze 1/4 wedge of fresh lemon, then pour a couple ounces of the bacon infused vodka. Cover with your favorite tomato juice or V-8, if you prefer, and shake it well. Pour drink into a tall frosted glass. Grind one more turn of black pepper and sprinkle with celery salt over the top. This looks nice, but also greets the nose with great smells. Serve with a sprig of freshly cooked bacon and crisp romaine lettuce leaf for garnish. I’ve also served a piece of toast with a light spread of mayonnaise. It’s like a BLT in a glass!

For a beer chaser, I recommend a dark stout or porter.

Whew! Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato..Enjoy  the bacon bloody Mary recipe, but not in moderation.
